Police Week is an important time to recognize and honor the brave men and women who serve and protect our communities. It is a time to remember those officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice and lost their lives in the line of duty. The National Peace Officers Memorial Service, Candlelight Vigil, and other events held during Police Week offer a chance to honor their memory and show appreciation for the sacrifice they made.
This year’s Police Week is especially poignant as we remember Bristol CT Police Lieutenant Dustin Demonte and Sergeant Alex Hamzy, who lost their lives while on duty after being ambushed on October 12th, 2022. These two officers were advisors for their agency’s cadet post and were dear friends to the NERLEEA family.
Lieutenant Demonte, who had served for 10 years, was survived by his expectant wife and two children. His daughter was born five months after his tragic death. Sergeant Hamzy, who had served for eight years, was survived by his wife, parents, and two sisters. Both officers were posthumously promoted, a testament to their dedication and service to their department and community.
As we reflect on the sacrifices made by Lieutenant Demonte, Sergeant Hamzy, and countless other officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty, we must also remember to thank and support those who continue to serve. National Police Week provides an opportunity to show appreciation for the hard work and dedication of law enforcement officers across the country.
On behalf of NERLEEA, we would like to extend our deepest gratitude to all law enforcement officers for their service and sacrifice. We recognize the challenging and often dangerous nature of their work and we stand with them as they continue to protect and serve our communities. Let us use this week to honor the fallen, support the living, and renew our commitment to creating a safer society.
