New Milford Police Launch Cadet Program

The police department is starting a cadet program designed to teach young residents life lessons and skills, while fostering communication and connection between them and local law enforcement.

“We’re looking for some good citizens within our community with high integrity, ages 13 to 21, to be part of our program,” Police Chief Spencer Cerruto announced last week.

New Milford Police Department’s youth cadets will meet once every two weeks, with COVID-19 safety measures in place, Cerruto said, and participate in “a lot of different activities.” Cadets will learn about a range of topics, from accident investigations to use of force and forensics, according to Cerruto. There will also be demonstrations with K9 and other officers, he said.

The official start date has not yet been determined, but Cerruto said the department has received interest from several families. The department, he said, views it as a way to connect and communicate with “younger citizens.”

Those interested in joining the program should call the New Milford Police Department at 860-355-3133 or send an email to cadets@newmilfordpolice.org.
